Reader’s Journal: The Giant in the Cave

April 4, 2013

Brief Summary: They found they were on a beautiful island. Odysseus decided to explore the island. They found a very big cave, which has huge food. they were found by a cyclops. Cyclops is a single-eyed giant. Odysseus tricked the giant. He told him that his name was “Nobody” and when they used the torch to attack the giant’s eye, the giant just shouted “Nobody attacked me!!” So the other giants did not come to catch Odysseus and his men because they thought nothing was wrong. They still had to escape the cave. They hid under the sheep in order to make it past the cyclops. The quickly left by boat. But this wasn’t the end of the their troubles. Cyclops called his father, Poseidon, and asked him to ruin Odysseus’ boat and harm Odysseus and his men. And Poseidon began to watch them.

I have some questions: What kind of person is Odysseus? We have already learned a lot about him, but what can we say?

1. He is careful and sensitive. When he decided to explore the island he had party of his army stay to protect the ship. This ensures that they can go home.

2. He is really clever. He tricked the cyclops by telling an unreal name (Nobody). And he also hid himself and his army under the sheep to escape from the Cyclops’ cave successfully.

3. He is really brave. When they are caught by Cyclops, he wasn’t afraid. He just talked to Cyclops, telling him that they were a Greek army, that they were not thieves. Even when Cyclops promised that he would eat them all, Odysseus could stay calm and make a plan to trick Cyclops.

I think Odysseus is careful, sensitive, clever, and brave. I am excited to learn more about his character in the coming chapters and to see what I can learn from him.
