Reader’s Journal: The Giant in the Cave

Brief Summary: They found they were on a beautiful island. Odysseus decided to explore the island. They found a very big cave, which has huge food. they were found by a cyclops. Cyclops is a single-eyed giant. Odysseus tricked the giant. He told him that his name was “Nobody” and when they used the torch to attack the giant’s eye, the giant just shouted “Nobody attacked me!!” So the other giants did not come to catch Odysseus and his men because they thought nothing was wrong. They still had to escape the cave. They hid under the sheep in order to make it past the cyclops. The quickly left by boat. But this wasn’t the end of the their troubles. Cyclops called his father, Poseidon, and asked him to ruin Odysseus’ boat and harm Odysseus and his men. And Poseidon began to watch them.

I have some questions: What kind of person is Odysseus? We have already learned a lot about him, but what can we say?

1. He is careful and sensitive. When he decided to explore the island he had party of his army stay to protect the ship. This ensures that they can go home.

2. He is really clever. He tricked the cyclops by telling an unreal name (Nobody). And he also hid himself and his army under the sheep to escape from the Cyclops’ cave successfully.

3. He is really brave. When they are caught by Cyclops, he wasn’t afraid. He just talked to Cyclops, telling him that they were a Greek army, that they were not thieves. Even when Cyclops promised that he would eat them all, Odysseus could stay calm and make a plan to trick Cyclops.

I think Odysseus is careful, sensitive, clever, and brave. I am excited to learn more about his character in the coming chapters and to see what I can learn from him.

Reader’s Journal: Traveling into Disaster

#1: In this chapter, Odysseus and his soldiers were on the way home. They reached Cicone and another strange island full of Lotus Eaters. The army was in trouble because lacked food and water. A brief summary:

  • Island 1: They killed people, were unguarded, and got attacked in the morning.
  • Island 2: Three soldiers were attracted by a kind of fruit. Odysseus finally dragged them       back to the boat.
  • Island 3: Details yet unknown. I’m guessing there will be danger.

#2  What’s wrong with those three explorers?

The certain thing is that they are affected by the Golden fruit. The fruit should be magical or something unusual that can make people forget everything and just fall into unstoppable desire for the fruit. What kind of fruit is it? We don’t know, other than it’s called Lotus Fruit. And from all the history and science records, there is no fruit that can cause the same kind of situation as in the story. So this may prove more that The Odyssey is an epic that includes real historical characters and something from the authors imagination.

#3  What will happen to Odysseus and his army next?

The final part of the chapter says, “They didn’t even wonder what kind of land they had found.’ From this sentence, we know there might be something unusual on the island and Odysseus will meet it. What’s going on on this island? I’m guessing it will be dangerous and maybe there will be some attackers. The first chapter’s title was ‘The War’, maybe here is another part of the war.

Reader’s Journal: The War (from The Odyssey)

#1 The story is told chronologically

First, the king’s wife was caught, and he wanted the army to get her back. Second, Odysseus needed to joined the army. It then described Odysseus’ family and his and his wife’s negative emotion to the war. Third, Odysseus left home and went to the battlefield in Troy. Finally, after ten years of being away at war, others began to return. But, Odysseus didn’t come back.

Question: Where was he?

Answer: Only the Gods knew where he was.

#2 The title of this section of the story is ‘The War’

What is the war? Why did the writer use the title ‘The War’? Firstly, it refers to the war Troy and Sparta, which has just ended at the beginning of this story. Secondly, the war caused Odysseus to go to the battlefield. This gives an explanation to the story. Also, the war may be still a part of the future for Odysseus, but we don’t know yet.

#3 The feeling that I have with this chapter is intrigue and excitement.

The sentences are simple and direct, however, the story is still hard to imagine. “Only the God saw him.” This sentence is really attractive and really makes me think about what will happen to this man in the future. It seems like the story tells you everything, but you will find there is still something hidden that you need to discover. This is really exciting.

#4 Historical Connection: The Trojan War

During the 1200s B.C., the Spartans and the Trojans fought a ten-year-long war. As history tells us, the Trojans caught Helen, the wife of a Spartan king, and this caused the war. The Spartans finally defeated the Trojans by tricking with a wooden horse. This is regarded in history as the best April Fools prank ever. Researchers have evidence that this war really happened. So the epic The Odyssey may really have happened in history.

A first for everything…

Unsure of what to write, I will simply share a few boring points:

1. I hate math.

2. I’m going to eat the Beijing Duck Wrap from Nosh for lunch.

3. I didn’t finish reading The Giver yet, but I will soon.

More, less boring points soon to come. My name is Michael Wang, and this is my blog.
